„War is us. War is Poland. There would be no Poland without war”. It all starts with innocent childhood games back in the yard. We’re full of war, fed by it at home and at school, from which we graduate already carrying a martyrological burden. Politicians have been creating the community and identity of our nation for a long time, preying on the common belief that Poland is predestined to be „Christ of all nations”. Łukasz Pawłowski scrutinizes the idea of „holy war” as well as the ethos and image of Polish soldier.

Pawłowski analyzes the image of Polish war hero, proving that this heroism is no more than a false construct embedded in Polish society’s DNA. His world is populated by zombielike characters straight from a horror movie – saint Maximilian Kolbe, officer Pilecki, Bruce Willis from Armageddon, Kunta Kinte from Roots […] Metro Afghanistan’s final resembles low-budget gore movie, a genre laced with grotesque cruelty, with which Pawłowski plays. I haven’t read many brazen, truly daring and even rebellious plays in a long time. While Poland celebrates its narration of „raising from its knees” and its former heroism, immersed in blood of the perished, „stoning” them to their another death by monuments and memorial sites, such subversive play as Metro Afghanistan seems like a living nightmare for the rulers. I can’t wait for the premiere.

A dense and gloomy family drama at the centre of which is the mother. Her husband, their three daughters and lovers and husbands are people caught up in something strange that holds this family together: betrayals, lies, denials and a tree that grows in the living room. In this drama, the author sketches various psychological portraits and complicated arrangements. The father, who for years "fails to notice" his wife's infidelity and naively confuses love with a morbid addiction, and after her death decides not to get out of bed, obsessively waiting for his own death. A younger sister, Su, aggressive and addicted to sex, who as a child was a silent observer of her mother's summer indiscretions; Su's lover, addicted to her and slowly getting absorbed into the family; Meg and Piotr's marriage, based on silence and deception. Mutual hatred and desperate attempts at forgiveness. Dissolving relationships and a crippling loneliness. A sense of meaningless existence expressed in suggestive language:

" Piotr - ... nothing that I did on the way made any sense, either you or the baby... all this cheating, shit, shit...
Meg - Piotr, what's going on?
Piotr - Leave me alone! Leave me alone! I've told you this so many times...
every day... every glance... every sip of coffee in the morning... (...) every restrained scream, every insult not thrown, mug, plate, phone, iron...
Meg - Piotr, calm down.
Piotr - every drunken Saturday... every slut fucked in the car... sister...
Meg - Piotr, calm down...
Piotr - but I don't want to calm down... I've been calm too long... I don't want your forgiveness..."

The open construction of this drama allows for different stories to be composed - the author points out that the sequence of scenes can be freely chosen. And just as the editing in the film can completely change its tone, so the director has the opportunity to put different accents and create different chronologies of events. The stuffy atmosphere marked by family dramas will be the axis of the plot anyway. Pawłowski's play resembles Bergman's famous Whispers and Cries and undoubtedly gives the actors and the director great opportunities for creative explorations.

Pawłowski, Łukasz

Born in 1977. Graduated from PWST in Wrocław in 2002. Until 2009 he was a member of the ensemble of the Polish Theatre in Poznań, in which he played, among others: Lieutenant in Helmucik (I. Villqist, dir. P. Łysak), Piotr Wierchowieński in Demons (F. Dostojewski, dir. M. Fiedor), Joaquin Perez Fernandez Rivas Rooney in Tales of Argentina (based on W. Gombrowicz, dir. P. Kamz), Myzdral in Ferdydurke (W. Gombrowicz, dir. A. Tyszkiewicz). He also played Karol in The Visit of an Old Lady (F. Dürrenmatt, dir. W. Krzystek) at the Television Theatre.

For many years he has been cooperating with the Usta Usta Republika Theatre from Poznań, for which he writes dramas and with which he won the Main Prize at the XXII Alternative Theatre Meetings Klamra in Toruń in 2014 for his performance Uczta / Feast directed by W. Wiński. He has also written such texts for this theatre as: Trials, Battalion and Hidden.

As an actor, he is a laureate of many awards and distinctions; for his role in the WTF!?? of the AnonyMMous.org group, he received First Prize at the 11th National Review of the Contemporary Monodrama in Warsaw in 2013. Two years later, at the same festival, he was awarded the Grand Prix for his thisisnotanartisticstance! that means there will be no premiere! dir. by A. Piotrowska and the Main Prize at the Koszalin National Monodrama Days for the same play.

His dramas were also recognized; several times his plays reached the second stage of the Gdynia Drama Award (Never ending sorry, Donnie&Glide, Other City). In 2012, Safari Zebra was selected in a competition for the 33rd PPA in Wrocław. The premiere took place on 27.03.2012 in Teatr Współczesny in Wrocław. In 2008 the play A+B=Rh- received a distinction in the "Mirror. Picture. Illusion" in Łódź. This play had its premiere in March 2017 at the Municipal Theatre in Leszno, directed by the author.

Łukasz Pawłowski also writes songs (among others, for Krzysztof Kiliański, the Snowman band and for the plays); in 2016, he cooperated with the Capitol Theatre in Wrocław on the play Moja mama czarodziejka (My Mother the Sorceress) directed by Agnieszka Oryńska.
