Przyjaciele Pana Kanta

“The Friends of Mr Kant” is a sort of philosophical trip. Jacek Papis tries to reveal the last years of the life of Immanuel Kant, one of the greatest European thinkers, who developed cognitive study and set modern standards for it, stating that in a cognitive process there matters not only a subject and an object, but also forms. In the final scenes we witness the silent genius. He is in bed with a group of faithful friends around him. Papis succeeds in presenting how anonyms of pure reason described by Kant influenced his own life choices. It refers to the dilemmas of freedom and necessity. At the age of 73, after lecturing for almost 30 years at the local university, Kant realised that his attitude towards religion doesn’t agree with the official views over the matter. “As a king’s subject” he stated, “I am obliged to remain silent”. The vagueness of Kant’s biography makes him mysterious. What’s interesting, Kant himself hated music; he was not interested in painting, or theatre. He was probably indifferent to poetry as well; however, the author makes him recite the pieces of “The Odyssey” which serves the purpose of illustrating the mental pedantry of Kant. The author of “The Critics of the Pure Reason” could be called “a man of habit”, somebody attached to the repeating of the appearances of the world. Due to his outstanding mental apparatus, he was able to use this repeated actions of the nature to perform deep analysis and to draw his conclusions, which made him a famous and eminent philosopher. Jacek Papis shows the main character as a modest individual who carefully examines both the nature and the mind. Appealing to the imperatives of goodness and honesty, he was the man of many faces: not only melancholic and weird, but also peaceful and charming. The scenes from “The Friends of Mr. Kant” are perfect complement and illustration of Kant’s philosophy.
